New Pathway Proposed to Speed Medicare Coverage

A new program proposed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) would allow breakthrough medical devices to secure Medicare reimbursement.
The Transitional Coverage for Emerging Technologies pathway would expedite coverage for up to five devices each year.
Submit your public comments to CMS by August 28.

Focused Ultrasound Makes Anti-Epileptic Drug More Effective in Preclinical Study

Researchers have developed a new method to improve the treatment of epilepsy using focused ultrasound.
The technology increased the effectiveness of an anti-epilepsy drug by blocking the drug from binding to a protein that inhibits it from entering the brain.
The preclinical experiments produced fewer seizures and shorter duration of seizure activity.

Carthera Secures $40 Million, Plans to Launch Brain Tumor Trial

Carthera will use part of the funds to begin its first pivotal multicenter trial for recurrent glioblastoma.
SonoCloud-9 is an implantable device that uses low-intensity ultrasound to enable repeated blood-brain barrier opening.
The company also plans to continue developing the device for other brain oncology and neurodegenerative indications.

Meeting Report: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023

ASCO 2023 featured updates from an ongoing brain cancer liquid biopsy trial and a pediatric sonodynamic therapy trial.
Nina Theresa Yoh, MD, received a prestigious Young Investigator Award for her work using focused ultrasound to treat childhood brain tumors.
