This novel technology focuses beams of ultrasound energy precisely and accurately on targets deep in the brain without damaging surrounding normal tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it Works<\/strong><br>Where the beams converge, focused ultrasound produces therapeutic effects that are being evaluated. Focused ultrasound energy can be used to increase or decrease the brain signals that are released from the target tissue, with the goal of returning these to a more appropriate spectrum of responses to circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary options for treatment of bipolar disorder include medications and behavioral therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For certain patients, focused ultrasound could provide a more effective treatment than current conventional therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focused ultrasound is noninvasive, so it does not carry added concerns like surgical wound healing or infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focused ultrasound can reach the desired target without damaging surrounding tissue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can be repeated, if necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT07108257?term=NCT07108257&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> is recruiting patient for treatment of bipolar disorder in Sunnybrook, Canada. This is using bilateral targeting of the anterior limb of the internal capsule as a treatment for this disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06482762?term=NCT06482762&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> is recruiting patients in Boston, Mass. that uses low frequency focused ultrasound on the amygdala to help patients with bipolar disorder.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT05147142?term=focused+ultrasound&amp;recrs=a&amp;cond=Depression&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> primarily targeting depression and anxiety, is also treatment patients with bipolar II disorder, in Providence, Rhode Island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation updates these pages regularly, but with the increasing number of clinical trials, we want to be sure that our audience has the latest information available.
