Focused Ultrasound Therapy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Focused ultrasound is a noninvasive, therapeutic technology with the potential to improve the quality of life and decrease the cost of care for patients with relapsed or persistent Graves\u2019 disease. This novel technology focuses beams of ultrasound energy precisely and accurately on targets in the thyroid gland without damaging surrounding normal tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it Works<\/strong>
Where the beams converge, focused ultrasound produces precise ablation (thermal destruction of tissue) enabling patients with Graves\u2019 disease to be treated without surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advantages<\/strong>
Graves\u2019 disease is typically treated with anti-thyroid hormonal therapy and beta blockers, but the treatment for relapsed or persistent Graves\u2019 disease typically involves taking radioactive iodine or having surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For certain patients, focused ultrasound may provide a noninvasive alternative to surgery with less risk of complications \u2013 such as risk to adjacent (normal) tissues \u2013 at a lower cost. Focused ultrasound also does not use any radioactive materials and can be done without incurring the risk of general anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the present time, there are no clinical trials recruiting patients for focused ultrasound treatment of Graves\u2019 disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regulatory Approval and Reimbursement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To our knowledge, the treatment for Graves\u2019 disease is not covered by medical insurance companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
