There are many different forms of dystonia, including focal dystonia, segmental dystonia, multifocal dystonia, hemidystonia, and generalized dystonia.\u202fAdditionally, specific types like\u202fcervical dystonia, blepharospasm,\u202foromandibular dystonia,\u202flaryngeal dystonia,\u202fand writer&#8217;s cramp are also recognized. This novel technology focuses beams of ultrasound energy precisely and accurately on targets deep in the brain without damaging surrounding normal tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it Works<\/strong><br>Where the beams converge, focused ultrasound produces precise ablation (thermal destruction of tissue) enabling dystonia to be treated without surgery. While there are several potential treatment targets, the ventrooralis (Vo nucleus of the thalamus) has been the target of initial studies treating musician\u2019s or writer\u2019s dystonia. More recently, targeting of the internal portion of the globus pallidus has been pursued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><br>The primary options for treatment of dystonia include medications and invasive surgery. However,&nbsp;medications work temporarily, whereas focused ultrasound will offer a more durable treatment that may be permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For certain patients, focused ultrasound could provide a noninvasive alternative to surgery with less risk of complications \u2013 such as surgical wound healing or infection \u2013 at a lower cost.&nbsp;If needed, focused ultrasound can also be repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clinical-trials\">Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/search?term=NCT07417280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is using low intensity focused ultrasound to\u00a0impact\u00a0patients with multiple types of disorders, including many types of tremors, dystonia, epilepsy, and addictive substance abuse conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06367608?cond=dystonia&amp;term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;aggFilters=status:not%20rec&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> for hand dystonia (also known as musicians or writer\u2019s cramp) is recruiting patients at the University of Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A multi-center&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT07168850?term=NCT07168850&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;for limb dystonia has begun recruiting patients in Italy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT07172295?term=NCT07172295&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in Taiwan is treating&nbsp;patients with refractory essential tremor, Parkinson\u2019s disease tremor or dystonia using focused ultrasound.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06036199?cond=dystonia&amp;term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;aggFilters=status:not%20rec&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clinical trial<\/a> <\/strong>for pediatric patients with cerebral palsy with dyskinetic dystonia is also recruiting patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/trialsearch\/Trial2.aspx?TrialID=JPRN-UMIN000016590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in Japan has&nbsp;begun treating patients with cervical dystonia has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT05965960?term=NCT05965960&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Toronto is treating patients with dystonia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation updates these pages regularly, but with the increasing number of clinical trials, we want to be sure that our audience has the latest information available.
