This novel technology focuses beams of ultrasound energy precisely and accurately on targets deep in the brain without damaging surrounding normal tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it Works<\/strong><br>Where the beams converge, focused ultrasound produces two therapeutic effects that are being evaluated. One mechanism is thermal ablation, which heats and destroys the targeted tissue. Another is the use of neuromodulation, where focused ultrasound is able to lower the impact of epileptic impulses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits\">Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Current treatments for epilepsy include medication, surgery, radiofrequency or laser ablation, deep brain stimulation, and stereotactic radiosurgery, all of which have limitations and side effects. Focused ultrasound has the potential to provide an alternative to invasive surgery or to replace radiosurgery for treatment of medication refractory epilepsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Noninvasive &#8211; no incisions, no risk of infection or bleeding, less pain, and rapid recovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image-guided &#8211; precision targeting with minimal damage to surrounding tissue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real time target confirmation &#8211; using sub-ablative treatment parameters, the target can be tested for location accuracy prior to ablation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe, temporary and repetitive opening of the blood brain barrier (BBB) &#8211; enhancing the delivery of therapeutics directly to the brain target site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fractionated ablation &#8211; ability to treat in a step-wise fashion in order to preserve tissue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No ionizing radiation &#8211; fewer side effects and can be safely repeated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conformal &#8211; treatment confined within the boundaries of the entire targeted volume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-regulatory-authorizations\">Regulatory Authorizations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Focused ultrasound is not approved by any regulatory bodies worldwide as a treatment for epilepsy, nor is the treatment reimbursed by medical insurance providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clinical-trials\">Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"InSightec Focused Ultrasound Brain Treatment Animation\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XyVdc6OeShY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/search?term=NCT07417280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is using low intensity focused ultrasound to impact patients with multiple types of disorders, including many types of tremors, dystonia, epilepsy, and addictive substance abuse conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT07353918?cond=NCT07353918&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in Virginia is treating patients with low intensity focused ultrasound to&nbsp;improve symptoms from their epilepsy. This trial is recruiting patients by invitation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06388707?term=NCT06388707&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in several states is using low frequency neuromodulation to treat those with drug resistant, unilateral or bilateral epilepsy with the NaviFUS system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT05032105?cond=Epilepsy&amp;term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;aggFilters=status:not%20rec&amp;rank=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Ohio is treating patients with drug resistant epilepsy and anxiety with focused ultrasound ablation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06492720?term=NCT06492720&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Taiwan is treating patients with low intensity focused ultrasound neuromodulation for drug resistant epilepsy using the NaviFUS system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT04999046?term=NCT04999046&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">clinical trial<\/a><\/strong> in Taiwan is treating patients with drug resistant epilepsy with the NaviFUS system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT02804230?cond=Epilepsy&amp;term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;aggFilters=status:rec&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in the US is treating patients with drug resistance epilepsy with the Insightec system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06292494?term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;cond=Epilepsy&amp;aggFilters=status:rec&amp;rank=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Taiwan is treating patients with drug resistance epilepsy with the Insightec system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT05947656?term=NCT05947656&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Australia is treating patients with drug resistant epilepsy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?cond=&amp;term=+NCT03868293&amp;cntry=&amp;state=&amp;city=&amp;dist=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;at the Brigham and Women\u2019s University is enrolling patients with drug resistant temporal lobe epilepsy for pulsed low intensity focused ultrasound treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?cond=&amp;term=NCT03417297&amp;cntry=&amp;state=&amp;city=&amp;dist=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;at University of North Carolina is recruiting patients.
