I live in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, part of the Seoul Satellite City, with my wife. I have two daughters who are married. When I was young, I worked as a salary man before starting my own business 20 years ago. I produce products like interior films as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and supply them to distributors.<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/strong>In September of 2021, I felt some discomfort in my stomach, so I went to a local clinic for an examination. I hadn\u2019t experienced any pain until then, and I hadn’t undergone a comprehensive checkup for five years due to a busy schedule. During the checkup, an ultrasound revealed signs of pancreatic cancer. I then underwent detailed examinations such as CT and MRI scans at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, where the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CT scan indicated that the size of the tumor was approximately 3 to 3.5 cm. When I first heard about pancreatic cancer at Ajou University Hospital, I didn’t know much about it. After the diagnosis, I learned from the internet and heard from friends and neighbors that pancreatic cancer was relatively uncommon in the past but is increasing, with a low survival rate of around 5%. This information made me anxious, and I had many questions and found it emotionally challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, my family urged me to seek a second opinion at a larger hospital in Seoul to confirm the diagnosis and explore other treatment options. Upon visiting Seoul National University Hospital, I initially visited a surgeon, thinking that pancreatic cancer treatment was primarily surgical. However, the surgeon referred me to Professor Sang-hyub Lee, a gastroenterologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When did you first hear about focused ultrasound?<\/strong>

<\/strong>While hospitalized for the biopsy and chemotherapy treatment, Professor Sang-hyub Lee introduced me to research on treating pancreatic cancer with focused ultrasound. Until then, I was unaware of such technology. Originally, I had planned to undergo a total of 16 rounds of chemotherapy treatment. The chemotherapy was a painful experience\u2014skipping meals, feeling weak, and experiencing significant discomfort. The chemotherapy treatment process was very challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you decide to take part in a clinical trial?<\/strong>

<\/strong>I trusted Prof. Sang-hyub Lee, who had written a book on pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment from his extensive experience treating patients. There are three reasons I chose to participate in the clinical trial: the assurance of safety, the opportunity to have the treatment free of cost, and the possibility that participating in a clinical trial could open doors for more people to receive treatment. Professor Jae Young Lee, a radiologist, also reiterated that my participation will contribute to the development of the early stage of this technique, so I\u2019m pleased to participate in this clinical trial. At the beginning, the chemotherapy treatment was done with simultaneous focused ultrasound treatment. Due to positive treatment results, I only received eight rounds of chemotherapy treatment, and it was not necessary to proceed further with the chemotherapy. With focused ultrasound treatment alone, I felt that it\u2019s worthy to live. Whenever I was treated by focused ultrasound, I was peaceful due to no pain, so my life became stable. I am so grateful for the opportunity to get treated as part of this clinical trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the treatment itself like?<\/strong>

<\/strong>When I met others receiving ultrasound treatment at this hospital, some mentioned experiencing pain and taking painkillers. On the first day of treatment, I didn’t feel very anxious or uneasy \u2013 probably because the chemotherapy regimen was so difficult. Prof. Jae Young Lee and Nurse Soo-yeon Kang, who performed the focused ultrasound treatment for my pancreatic cancer, provided clear guidance and explanations, keeping me peaceful during the treatment. I felt no pain during the treatment, so I was calm without worries. I had confidence in the technology and was hopeful of a good outcome. Watching the ultrasound images, I was told that the cancer had significantly reduced through repeated treatments, making me even more comfortable and hopeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>While receiving treatment, Prof. Lee and Nurse Kang explained the details of which areas were treated and how much progress had been made through ultrasound images, making me feel comfortable. After two weeks, when I returned for the second treatment, I was more confident. For each treatment, I was hospitalized for three days and two nights. I could finish four focused ultrasound treatments almost every other week, though there were unexpected delays due to COVID-19. I felt no discomfort during the treatments. My mind was calm, and now I have returned to my daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am no longer undergoing cancer treatment, and I have resumed my daily life, even reopened my business. Considering my health when I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and during chemotherapy treatment, I am now remarkably healthy. I have gained back much of the weight I lost \u2013 up to 55 kg (or 120 pounds) \u2013 and I am currently maintaining a good digestion and eating well. Although my weight has not increased significantly, I hope to gain an additional 3-4 kg (6-8 pounds). Besides that, I feel healthy and am back to running my business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, I undergo regular check-ups with CT scans every three months, and I\u2019m advised to visit the surgery department after a year. Thanks to advanced technology, even as a pancreatic cancer patient with a low survival rate, I am grateful to receive treatment and to enjoy a normal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
