This novel technology focuses beams of ultrasound energy precisely and accurately on targets deep in the brain without damaging surrounding normal tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it Works<\/strong><br>Where the beams converge, focused ultrasound produces several therapeutic effects that are being evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One mechanism is the precise ablation (thermal destruction of tissue), which can be done to completely destroy the target or to partially treat it. Partial treatment is believed to stimulate the patient\u2019s immune response, which may have a broader impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another mechanism is the use of mechanical (non-thermal) histotripsy to destroy the tumor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A third mechanism is to use focused ultrasound to cause hyperthermia which enables the local release and absorption of a therapeutic that is contained in the blood stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><br>The primary options for treatment of kidney tumors depend on the type of the tumor, but typical approaches are partial or complete surgical removal. Radiation, arterial embolization or chemotherapy may also be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For certain patients, focused ultrasound could provide a noninvasive alternative to surgery with less risk of complications \u2013 such as surgical wound healing or infection \u2013 at a lower cost. It can reach the desired target without damaging surrounding tissue and is repeatable, if necessary.&nbsp;Focused ultrasound can also enhance the chemotherapy dose for the target, with less impact to the rest of the patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clinical-trials\">Clinical Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT05432232?term=focused+ultrasound&amp;recrs=a&amp;cond=Kidney+Cancer&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> using histotripsy for the treatment of kidney tumors has begun in the UK.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT05820087?term=NCT05820087&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> using histotripsy for the treatment of kidney tumors has begun in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT04791228?viewType=Table&amp;cond=Kidney%20Cancer&amp;term=focused%20ultrasound&amp;aggFilters=status:rec&amp;rank=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>clinical trial<\/strong><\/a> in Washington, DC is using focused ultrasound to treat a variety of relapsing solid tumors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation updates these pages regularly, but with the increasing number of clinical trials, we want to be sure that our audience has the latest information available.
