This is the ninth clinical indication for which focused ultrasound has been FDA cleared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2022\">2022<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound for Veterinary Applications<\/strong><br>A Foundation-funded clinical trial at Virginia Tech determined that focused ultrasound can safely ablate subcutaneous solid tumors in dogs. A team in Virginia also found that histotripsy safely and effectively treated osteosarcomas in client-owned dogs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Breakthroughs in Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/strong><br>Researchers in Spain successfully used focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in people with Parkinson\u2019s dementia. The results of a clinical trial investigating focused ultrasound to address a possible underlying cause of Parkinson\u2019s disease were also published in <em>Movement Disorders<\/em>. Finally, researchers in Toronto tested the safety and efficacy of focused ultrasound\u2013induced BBB opening to deliver enzyme replacement therapy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>New Brain Tumor Clinical Trials<\/strong><br>In Milan, researchers used sonodynamic therapy (SDT) in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastomas. Four sites across the US and Canada began a clinical trial to investigate focused ultrasound\u2019s role in enhancing immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer that has spread to the brain. Researchers in Washington, DC, also began a clinical trial using SDT to address diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound FDA Approved to Treat Essential Tremor Patients\u2019 Second Side<\/strong><br>Patients with essential tremor can now have their second side treated with focused ultrasound. This is also often referred to as bilateral treatment. Essential tremor commonly affects both sides of the body, and from 2016 to late 2022, focused ultrasound was only approved for unilateral treatments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2021\">2021<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Regulatory Updates for Parkinson\u2019s, Prostate, and Soft Tissue Tumors<\/strong><br>The US FDA expanded its 2018 approval of focused ultrasound to treat tremor-dominant Parkinson\u2019s disease to include the treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson\u2019s disease suffering with mobility, rigidity, or dyskinesia symptoms. The FDA also cleared Insightec\u2019s Exablate Prostate focused ultrasound system to ablate prostate tissue. Profound Medical\u2019s Sonalleve system received the CE mark for the treatment of desmoid tumors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>World-First for Metastatic Breast Cancer<\/strong><br>In a first-in-world clinical trial, researchers at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, demonstrated that MR-guided focused ultrasound can be used to safely deliver antibody therapy to breast cancer that has metastasized to the brain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound and Liquid Biopsies<\/strong><br>Results of a first-in-human study \u2013 published in Neuro-Oncology \u2013 found that focused ultrasound increased the amount of brain tumor biomarkers in the blood. The results suggest that focused ultrasound could reduce the need for invasive brain tumor biopsies and allow better monitoring of glioblastoma treatment responses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Pioneering Clinical Trials<\/strong><br>Researchers at West Virginia University have treated the first patient in a first-in-the-world clinical trial investigating focused ultrasound to address opioid use disorder. Theraclion also received approval for its first US trial to noninvasively address varicose veins using their SONOVEIN device.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2020\">2020<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Reimbursement Wins<\/strong><br>In February, the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began covering focused ultrasound for tremor-dominant Parkinson\u2019s disease for many patients in the Southeast. In July, CMS began covering focused ultrasound for essential tremor nationwide. By 2023, private payors like Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Anthem reimbursed the procedure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Liver Tumor Clinical Trial Begins in the US<\/strong><br>HistoSonics received approval to begin its first clinical trial in the US \u2013 called #HOPE4LIVER. The trial investigated the safety and efficacy of using the company\u2019s Edison platform \u2013 a sonic beam therapy platform utilizing histotripsy \u2013 to noninvasively and mechanically destroy liver tumors. The company began a similar study in Europe in early 2021. The Edison device earned Breakthrough Device Designation in October 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound for Psychiatric Disorders: Clinical Trial Results Published<\/strong><br>Researchers at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre published data indicating that focused ultrasound is safe and effective in addressing the symptoms of treatment-resistant major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Focused Ultrasound \u201cUnicorn\u201d<\/strong><br>A $150 million funding round made device manufacturer, Insightec, the first focused ultrasound unicorn (a privately held company valued over $1 billion.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound Approved to Treat Osteoid Osteomas<\/strong><br>The US FDA approved Profound Medical\u2019s Sonalleve MR-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MR-HIFU) system for the treatment of painful bone tumors \u2013 called osteoid osteomas \u2013 in the extremities. This marked the first focused ultrasound regulatory approval that directly impacts pediatric patients, and it was the sixth indication to earn approval in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2019\">2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Clinical Trial Results Published on Opening Blood-Brain Barrier<\/strong><br>CarThera published the results from its clinical trial using the SonoCloud-1 ultrasound implant to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) prior to carboplatin chemotherapy in patients with recurrent glioblastoma. <em>Nature Communications<\/em> also published clinical trial results showing it is possible to safely use MR-guided focused ultrasound to temporarily and reversibly open the BBB in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Ultrasound Device Earns FDA Approval to Treat the Prostate<\/strong><br>Profound Medical\u2019s TULSA-PRO\u00ae device earned US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to ablate prostate tissue. This is the first transurethral ultrasound device approved in the US, and it allows physicians to predictably ablate whole-gland or partial prostate tissue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2018\">2018<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Histotripsy Clinical Trial<\/strong><br>A first-in-human clinical trial \u2013 the \u201cTHERESA\u201d study \u2013 took place at three sites in Barcelona, Spain, under the direction of Joan Vidal-Jov\u00e9, MD, PhD, Head of Focused Ultrasound Ablation Oncology at Barcelona University Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound Drug Delivery Clinical Trial Published<\/strong><br>The first clinical trial demonstrating local drug delivery using focused ultrasound and temperature sensitive liposomes was performed in Oxford and published in <em>Lancet Oncology<\/em> in 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Neurological Clinical Trials<\/strong><br>A multisite clinical trial to treat the motor symptoms of Parkinson\u2019s disease began at Weill Cornell in New York. University of Maryland researchers also began the first US trial to open the blood-brain barrier in brain tumor patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>FDA Approval for Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/strong><br>On December 18, 2018, Insightec\u2019s Exablate Neuro device earned approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients with tremor-dominant Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2017\">2017<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Focused Ultrasound Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinical Trial Begins<\/strong><br>A team at Nicklaus Children\u2019s Hospital in Miami, Florida, treated the first patient in a pediatric and young adult brain tumor study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Trial<\/strong><br>The first clinical trial for Alzheimer\u2019s disease began at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada. The trial was one of the first to explore using focused ultrasound to temporarily disrupt the blood-brain barrier (BBB).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Veterinary Applications<\/strong><br>The Foundation launched a veterinary program and funded initial trials in canine cancer and wound healing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Profound Medical Transforms Industry<\/strong><br>Toronto-based Profound Medical announced that it will acquire Philips\u2019 Sonalleve MR-HIFU business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Partnering on Immunotherapy<\/strong><br>The Foundation partnered with the Cancer Research Institute to further focused ultrasound and immunotherapy combination approaches for cancer, funding the first joint project in 2018. In a year, more than 800,000 copies were distributed. In 2019, the audiobook version of the book was released, pushing the number of total books distributed over 1 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Essential Tremor Approval<\/strong><br>Insightec\u2019s Exablate Neuro device is approved to treat essential tremor in the US and Canada. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services subsequently assigned the procedure a payment level, the first step toward Medicare reimbursement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2015\">2015<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Depression Clinical Trial Begins<\/strong><br>The first patient with depression was treated in a focused ultrasound clinical trial led by Jin Woo Chang, MD, at Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First-in-Man Hyperthermia Treatment with MR-guided Focused Ultrasound<\/strong><br>W. Chu, in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, reported the feasibility and safety of MR-guided focused ultrasound hyperthermia in a pilot study on 10 patients with recurrent rectal cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Approvals to Treat the Prostate<\/strong><br>Two focused ultrasound devices \u2013 EDAP\u2019s Ablatherm Robotic HIFU and SonaCare Medical\u2019s Sonablate 450 \u2013 earned FDA clearance to ablate prostate tissue. Aryal, Y. Zhang <em>et al. <\/em>demonstrated that focused ultrasound can enhance delivery of anti-cancer drugs (Doxirubicin) and have a therapeutic effect on gliomas in a rat model. HF. Gao <em>et al<\/em>. also performed the first clinical trial using focused ultrasound to treat local advanced pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2012\">2012<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Regulatory Wins<\/strong><br>The FDA cleared focused ultrasound for the treatment of pain from bone metastases. Theraclion\u2019s EchoPulse also received CE marking in Europe to treat breast fibroadenoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2010\">2010<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Movement Disorder Trial<\/strong><br>W. Elias<em> et al. <\/em>successfully treated the first 15 patients with essential tremor at the University of Virginia in a pilot trial. All patients noted a significant decrease in their tremors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2009\">2009<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound for Pain<\/strong><br>E. Martin, D. Zheng <em>et al.<\/em> found focused ultrasound treatment may evoke a strong immune response to combat residual tumor cells and suppress remote metastasis in cancer patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2001\">2001<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Focused Ultrasound Society<\/strong><br>The International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) was formed to increase and diffuse knowledge of therapeutic ultrasound to the scientific and medical community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Breakthroughs in Brain Research<\/strong><br>K. Hynynen et al. determined that focused ultrasound plus microbubbles can cause localized and reversible disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a historically major obstacle in the treatment of brain diseases. G. Clement and K. Hynynen also demonstrated noninvasive focusing through human skull using a phased array and CT based planning algorithm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1999\">1999<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Volumetric Hyperthermia with MR-guided Focused Ultrasound<\/strong><br>C. Moonen and colleagues demonstrate volumetric heating for local hyperthermia with MR-guided focused ultrasound and real time temperature feedback in preclinical studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1998\">1998<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcranial Research<\/strong><br>K. Hynynen and F. Jolesz demonstrated the feasibility of using a large phased array applicator for through skull focusing and ablation and proposed the benefits of using cavitation for through skull treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1996\">1996<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Blood-brain Barrier Application<\/strong><br>K. Hynynen et al. first described a controlled, reversible, and reproducible manner of opening the blood-brain barrier, monitored by MRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1992\">1992<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Combination with MRI<\/strong><br>K. Hynynen et al. proposed the use of noninvasive focused ultrasound using magnetic resonance imaging to guide and monitor tissue damage. The term Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) was first coined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1991\">1991<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound for Brain Tumors<\/strong><br>A. Guthkelch and K. Hynynen et al. reported on the treatment of malignant brain tumors with focused ultrasound hyperthermia and radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1990\">1990<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound for BPH<\/strong><br>N. Sanghvi et al. developed and implemented a clinical protocol for focused ultrasound treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1988\">1988<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First FDA Approval<\/strong><br>Coleman and Lizzie developed the Sonocare CST-100 Therapeutic Ultrasound System which was designed to treat glaucoma. It was the first focused ultrasound system to earn FDA approval. However, it was ultimately outdated by laser surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1972\">1972<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HIFU Ablative Research by Francis Fry and Colleagues<\/strong><br>Between 1972 and 1984, Francis Fry and colleagues continued to carry out laboratory research on focused ultrasound for solid tumors in preclinical models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1968\">1968<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Brain Cancer Treatment<\/strong><br>Dr. Robert Heimburger was the first neurosurgeon to use a focused ultrasound device to treat brain cancer, under ultrasound guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1964\">1964<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Cancer Application<\/strong><br>M. Oka reported on the successful use of focused ultrasound to treat thyroid and breast cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1962\">1962<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound and the Brain<\/strong><br>Russell Meyers and William Fry utilized focused ultrasound to treat numerous human patients suffering from various brain pathologies, in particular Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1957\">1957<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Research Group Dedicated to Focused Ultrasound<\/strong><br>William Fry, Francis Fry, and Reginald C. Eggleton founded the Interscience Research Institute in Champaign, Illinois. Its goals were two-fold: to develop and apply high-intensity ultrasound instrumentation to treat neurological disorders; and to develop computer-based, low-intensity ultrasound instrumentation for visualization of the soft tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1955\">1955<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The \u201cFathers\u201d of Focused Ultrasound<\/strong><br>Brothers William and Francis Fry performed a partial ablation of the basal ganglia after a craniotomy using focused ultrasound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1954\">1954<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focused Ultrasound as Lobotomy Alternative<\/strong><br>Petter A. Lindstrom studied the effects of focused ultrasound-mediated lesioning as an alternative to a lobotomy procedure in patients with carcinomatosis and cancer-related pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1952\">1952<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Focused Ultrasound Meeting<\/strong><br>The first major symposium on Ultrasound in Biology and Medicine was held at the University of Illinois to examine phenomena of how ultrasonic energy interacted with and acted upon biological materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1950\">1950<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Therapeutic Use<\/strong><br>Lars Leksell designed a specially adapted frame and ultrasound transducer for the purpose of focused ultrasound lesioning and successfully used it on patients to treat psychiatric disorders. He eventually abandoned the method due to lack of imaging and the need for craniotomies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1944\">1944<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Preclinical Study<\/strong><br>John G. Lynn and Tracy J. Putcham were able to destroy cerebral tissue in animals using focused ultrasound. They treated 37 animals in all and found well-circumscribed lesions on physical examination of the areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1942\">1942<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Focused Ultrasound Device<\/strong><br>William Fry, a physicist veteran of naval sonar research, and his brother, Francis Fry, began civilian research at the Bioacoustic Research Laboratory (University of Illinois) and a research team developed a focused ultrasound device that mechanically aligned four focused ultrasound generators to produce a pinpoint lesion without damage to the surrounding tissue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>First Tissue Lesion<\/strong><br>John G. Lynn et al. proposed the idea that ultrasound could be intensely focused to produce extreme heat and non-invasively destroy targeted diseased tissue within the body. They were able to produce lesions deep in bovine liver without damaging surrounding tissue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1935\">1935<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Focusing of Ultrasound<\/strong><br>Johannes Gruetzmacher found that an ultrasound could be focused when he placed a concave surface to a piezoelectric generator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1932\">1932<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Thought of Therapeutic Use for Ultrasound<\/strong><br>H. Freundlich, K. Collner, and F.
